A visit to the zoo

Don’t be fooled by their simplicity. Little Mr. Turtle and Little Ms. Ibis have their names written all over them. You would know what we’re talking about if you visit the site http://www.bemboszoo.com/Bembo.swf

Bembo’s zoo is the not so typical “ABC” book designed by Roberto de Vicq de Cumptich. Folks who haven’t seen it before will find that Bembo’s zoo is instructional design in topmost form.

The book is out of publication now but the website is a treasure trove of brilliance in design. We love the concept of gates opening into the world of alphabets and each alphabet turning into an exotic animal. Leave aside kids, the book is a lesson in simplicity and innovation in design for practicing designers. The sheer magic of turning Bembo Roman font into an animal is fascinating. The minimal use of colours and the design are very catchy and drive home the point, of making spellings fun. Also note the beautiful combination of text and picture used in relevance to the context.
